Freshening Up Your Decor for Spring

It's that time of year already. Winter is ending and it's time to feel like spring. One of the best ways to do this is to clean up the house and freshen up your decor.

Don't just start at random. Think about your priorities and plan out the order in which you want to get things done. For most people it is easiest to go room by room and plan to spend several days getting all your spring cleaning done.

Make sure you have enough cleaning supplies on hand. It is very frustrating to be in the middle of cleaning and run out. Try using less toxic cleansers whenever possible - it's better for you and your family. And if you must use harsh chemicals, wear gloves and open the windows for good air flow. Also make sure you don't mix any of your cleaning chemicals. Even relatively harmless ones can turn toxic when mixed.

Dust everything, starting from the top. You may need a ladder to dust things such as ceiling fans, so be careful.

Don't forget to dust your picture frames. Be very careful cleaning the glass, especially if you're using a glass cleaner. Spray the cloth lightly rather than the glass to minimize drips.

Wash or dust other items as appropriate.

Get some help and clean under your appliances and furniture. An amazing amount of dust can collect under a refrigerator, for example. This kind of dirt is not all that visible, but you will appreciate having it gone.

As you clean, consider which items need updating or replacement. Having fresh decorations or furniture in a freshly cleaned house feels great! Decide which items can be sold or given away versus simply throwing them away.

If you enjoy decorating your home by the season, haul those springtime decorations out. Spring is a great time for the bright, cheery look in a home. A light touch of flowers can give a home that springtime feel without being overpowering or excessively feminine.

But flowers aren't the only way to make it feel like spring, even if they are the most classic. Anything in a soft, cheery color can give that feeling. Put the darker colors accenting your decor into storage for later in the year and go lighter.

Spring can be a very motivating time of year. Take the good feeling of the sun coming back and make your home feel more comfortable. Get it cleaned up, freshened up and make it look the way you've been meaning to.

And then kick back and enjoy.
