Making the Most of Your Small Kitchen

One major complaint many people have when they read about decorating ideas for their kitchen is that inevitably the featured kitchen has room to do just about anything the heart might desire. But anyone with a small kitchen knows that there are many challenges to decorating a smaller kitchen.

Whatever you do, avoid dark colors in your small kitchen. Bright, cheerful colors will make the room feel bigger and more comfortable. Soft yellows can make the room feels sunny, for example.

How do your countertops look? If they're old and dingy, maybe it's time to replace them. Depending on your budget you could hire someone to put in a light-colored stone or tile work, or you could do tiles yourself. I don't recommend doing stonework yourself as it is extremely difficult to do well. For the very tightest of budgets, a high quality, high gloss paint can work for a time. Oil based is stronger, but may not be easy to get in some places. and cleanup is much more difficult. If you're concerned about the strength of your paint, check out a good quality varnish to cover it. Don't skimp on the quality; just think of all the abuse your kitchen countertops have to take. Low quality paints just won't survive.

What about your window treatments? You don't have to stick with plain old blinds. Curtains look wonderful in a kitchen. They can be patterned to match the overall theme of your kitchen or be in complementary colors. If the budget won't permit curtains, even adding a window scarf can make a huge difference, yet cost relatively little. Go asymmetric for a little more interest around the window, hanging one end of the window scarf lower than the other.

Let's not ignore the floor! Start by considering the material on the floor. Most kitchens have tile floors, of course, as tiles cope very well with the inevitable messes. Replacing tile floors is a lot of work but can be well worth the effort. On the other hand, a quick fix can be found by adding an area rug.

Add interesting pieces of decor around the kitchen to complete the look. These should coordinate with your overall theme, whether you love the country look or something more modern. Don't limit yourself by only considering items you hang on the wall - even storage containers can look good enough to sit out in view.

You don't have to have a lot of room to decorate a small kitchen. All you need is a bit of creativity. The kitchen is one of the most used rooms in your home, and often a popular place to talk with guests. Make it look good and feel comfortable.
