What is Rustic Home Decor?

The rustic look can make a home feel very old fashioned yet comfortable. It can be a way to get away from living in the city or suburbs and remind you of a simpler way to live.

Rustic decor is, by its very essence, simple, but that doesn’t mean you’ll find it easy to decorate your home in this manner. Finding just the right items will take time.

Think of a country home when you think of rustic decor. What comes to mind? Wicker baskets? Cast iron stoves? Wooden furniture? Maybe painted tiles. All these elements and more can be combined to create that rustic look you are after.

Iron, for example, can be used in more than that pot-bellied, wood burning stove. Cast iron trivets could make a great accent on the walls. It could be a part of the furniture. Cast iron candle holders or even a chandelier might work well in your home.

Tiling can really add to the rustic look. Think of a pattern you’d like to use, possibly with more than one color of tile, and accent it with painted tiles.

Wicker baskets look great in rustic decor. In the kitchen they can be used to store fruits. In the living room they can be empty, hold pine cones or other items to add to the look of the room. They can be plain or lined with a country patterned fabric.

Wood is very important to rustic decor. If it looks aged, so much the better. Try a rocking chair - the old fashioned kind, not the gliders so popular now, in the living room.

Just about anything handcrafted will look great with your rustic home decor. If the handcrafted goods have a rustic flavor to them, so much the better.

Plants are another good touch. We’re thinking country here, again. Try plants that suit your preferences for how much care you’d like to give.

Rustic decor is about feeling comfortable in a back to nature way. It’s a great way to escape the pressures you may feel with modern life.
